Mit dem Ende des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts begann auch die Zeit der Warenhäuser. Für all diejenigen, welche nicht in einer grossen Stadt lebten entstanden die ersten Versandhäuser als beliebte Alternative. Man konnte die Ware zu Hause bequem aus dem Katalog auswählen und in Monatsraten bezahlen. Zu den führenden Unternehmen dieser Branche gehörte damals das Pariser Versandhaus J.Girard et Cie. Die Firma verkaufte Lampen, Bücher, Photo-Apparate und kunstgewerbliche Artikel. Ab 1899 wurde das Angebot mit Phonographen erweitert. Wurden anfänglich die handelsüblichen Geräte der Marke Pathé vertrieben, so liess man schon bald eigene Spezialanfertigungen herstellen.

Das wohl schönste Gerät, welches für die Firma J.Girard et Cie hergestellt wurde, ist der "Ménestrel". Als luxuriöse Sonderanfertigung, kam dieser Phonograph 1902 in den Handel. Ursprünglich war er blau gestrichen und konnte nur die Walzen der Grösse „Standard“ spielen. Ab 1903 gab es die grüne Version, welche auch das Spielen des grösseren Walzen-Formats "Inter" erlaubte. Dank einer Hebelmechanik lässt sich die Schalldose und der Trichter je nach Walzen-Grösse auf die gewünschte Position einstellen. Motor und Schalldose sind ein Fabrikat von Pathé-Frères. Der Sockel ist aus massivem Gusseisen und das Gehäuse ist im Stile "Luis XV" mit goldener Farbe verziert. Charakteristisch sind das königliche Lilienmuster und die goldene Lyra auf dem Blech-Deckel. Das Gerät kostete damals insgesamt 147 Francs. Bezahlt wurde mit einundzwanzig Monatsraten à 7 Francs. Dazu bekam man zehn grosse, zehn kleine und fünf unbespielte Walzen.

The end of the nineteen century was also the time, when big stores began to dominate the noble Boulevards in large cities. For all those, who lives fare away from this centres, mail order houses was a very popular alternative for shopping. The articles cut be selected at home by catalogue and delivered by post with payment by instalments. One of this mail order houses was the Paris firm J.Girard et Cie. This company delivered at first lamps, books, cameras, und art-works. In 1899 they added phonographs, manufactured by Pathé. Later, J.Girard et Cie sold a series of phonographs, special designed by Pathé and only obtainable by the own mail order.

One of the most beautiful of this phonographs was the "Ménestrel", especially built by Pathé for J.Girard et Cie. This luxury talking machine was put on the marked in 1902 in a blue version. The green painted phonograph was sold first time in 1903. A special up and down mechanic at the reproducer and horn assembly allows to play both cylinders, the normal Edison-format "Standard" and the larger "Inter". The phonograph is built on a massive cast iron base. The case is decorated by golden painting in style of "Luis XV". Characteristic are the royal lily ornamentation and the golden lyre on the iron lid.

The "Ménésterel" costs of that time 147 French francs, payable by 21 monthly instalments of 7 French francs. Included in the delivery was ten cylinders format standard, ten cylinders format inter and five blank cylinders for recordings.
