Die Schweizer Firma Thorens aus Ste-Croix im Waadtländer Jura produzierte eine enorme Anzahl an verschiedenen Gerätetypen. Viele davon wurden ohne Markenbezeichnung im Auftrag hergestellt und vom Kunden dann unter seinem eigenen Label verkauft. Ein äusserst rentabler Geschäftszweig war auch der Export von Motoren. Bereits 1913 bot Thorens rund dreissig verschiedene Typen an, darunter ein Vier-Feder-Laufwerk, das mit einmaligem Aufziehen, 13–15 Platten hintereinander abspielen konnte.

Ein Verkaufshit der Firma Thorens waren auch die Reise-Grammophone. Das Modell "Graphonette" mit massivem Holzgehäuse wurde um 1925 gebaut. Der Trichter aus Holz ist im Deckel integriert, hat eine Länge von 10 cm, und eine Öffnung von 2,5 cm. Trotz dieser kleinen Dimensionen tönt das Grammophon ausgezeichnet, nicht zuletzt dank der qualitativ hochstehenden Argentin- Schalldose. Der Durchmesser des Plattentellers beträgt nur 12 cm. Man kann damit Platten bis 25 cm abspielen, die dazu aber mit einer Klemme an der Mittelachse befestigt werden müssen. Wie bei den meisten Reisegrammophonen lassen sich auch beim "Graphonette" alle Teile schön ordentlich im Gehäuse versorgen.

The Swiss music box manufacturer Thorens from Ste-Croix began short time after 1900 to change it’s production into talking machines. The company produced until the early 1930’s a wide range of gramophones. It became also a specialist to manufacture parts. Particular the motors by Thorens were asked very mutch because there high quality and reliability. In 1913, Thorens offered some thirty different motors, one of them with four springs to play 13-15 records by one time winding. There are a lot of gramophones built somewhere on the world, with a motor manufactured by Thorens.

Another speciality by Thorens are the portable gramophones like the "Graphonette". This handy talking machine was built about 1925 into a massive wooden box. The small 4 inches long wooden horn with 1 inch opening is fitted in the lid. Nevertheless this small dimensions, the "Graphonette" sounds excellent, not at least because it’s Argentin concert sound-box. The turntable with diameter of 5 inches allows to play records up to10 inches. The records must be fixed with a special clamp on the central axe. Like the most of all portable gramophones, al parts of the "Graphonette" can be removed into the box.
